Prince of Air and Darkness Audiobook Summary

Phineas Smith has been cursed with a power no one could control. Roark Lyne is his worst enemy and his only hope.

The only human student at Mather’s School of Magick, Phineas Smith has a target on his back. Born with the rare ability to tap into unlimited magick, he finds both Faerie Courts want his allegiance-and will do anything to get it. They don’t realize he can’t levitate a feather, much less defend the Faerie Realm as it slips into civil war.

Unseelie Prince Roark Lyne, Phineas’s roommate-and self-proclaimed arch nemesis-is beautiful and brave and a pain in the ass. Phineas can’t begin to sort through their six years of sexual tension masquerading as mutual dislike. But Roark is also the only one able to help Finn tame his magick.

Trusting Roark’s mysterious motives may be foolish; not accepting his temporary protection would be deadly.

Caught in the middle of the impending war, Phineas and Roark forge a dangerous alliance. And as the walls between them crumble, Phineas realizes that Roark isn’t the monster he’d imagined. But their growing intimacy threatens to expose a secret that could either turn the tide of the war . . . or destroy them both.

Prince of Air and Darkness by M.A. Grant Reviews

GUYS. I love this book so much??? You guys don’t even understand. This book came out of nowhere and hit me square in the feels. WHAT THE HELL.

You have a soft human (Phineas, also known as Finny or Finn) who can’t control his tie to the ley line and has monsters coming at him from all sides, and then there’s the princely fae (Roark) who will do everything to protect Finny whilst denying he has feelings for him.

Trigger warnings for torture scenes.

So. I will say that the cover DOES NOT match the tone for the book at all. I saw the cover awhile back and without reading the blurb, I thought this was going to be a MC (motorcycle club) romance and almost didn’t pick this one up. I feel like the story is lighter than the cover suggests. This is instead, a book where two fae courts are in a tense standstill and war seems to be just on the horizon. There’s the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, also known as the Summer and Winter Courts. This book has a strange balance of funny and endearing, mixing with it scenes of torture and ANGST.

This story takes place at a college, but it’s unclear what kind of college they’re at (besides it being a school of magic for magical beings. It’s mentioned a few times that they’re getting their Master’s degree, but I’m assuming they were there for their Bachelor’s as well? I do find it interesting that Roark is going through the motions of school while being an undefined “centuries” years old.

There’s a lot happening in this book, and a lot of the world-building is confusing, but I find this book is more about the characters even though there is a lot of stuff happening in the plot. I hate getting out of a book to Google something, so I did spend the entire book confused between the differences between the unseelie and seelie beings. I’m not sure how important it is to know beforehand some of the more intricate details of faeire lore before starting this book, but I sure didn’t know a whole lot and I think I managed to get the gist of it. Roark is the second prince of the Unseelie Court and his time on campus is to be look over his Court’s subjects. His unspoken duty is that he must look after Phineas.

Phineas is a soft human boy who is built like a football player and has the biggest heart. All he wants to do is to learn how to control the ley line magic coursing through him in order to save his parent’s farm. The power of the ley line is very powerful and no one is known to have survived very long with the power, and honestly, his acceptance that he could die very soon just breaks my heart.

Roark has his own sacrifices to make too, of course. And I do love Roark a lot but I do have moments where I see him in a different light and I wonder if he really deserves the pure hearted Finn. His time before meeting Finn is one of darkness. He has made a name for himself by torturing just about anyone for information if it benefits his Court. By the time we meet Roark, he’s a different person and a lot of that does have to do with Finn, but that side of him is still a part of him. So, I feel like the one torture scene in the middle of the book I could have done without, or at least without Roark leading it.

That being SAID. I do enjoy reading Finn and Roark’s interactions with one another. It starts off kind of enemies-to-lovers, with a lot of snark between the two. But, OH, there is a LOT of pining involved and Roark consistently jumping into situations to save Finn’s life. Their interactions with one another makes me grin like a SAP and I’m pretty sure I have almost half their lines highlighted on my Kindle just because they’re so precious (even when they try to break my heart).

There are some moments of this book that remind me a LOT of what Aelin goes through with her fire in the Throne of Glass books, and even the title reminds me a lot of Cassandra Clare’s book, Queen of Air and Darkness (who is Roark’s mother’s title in this book). There are hints of the Foxhole Court books too in this story and of COURSE any mention of the ley line reminds me of the Raven Cycle books. So, there are moments in this story that feels like a mixture of YA books, rather than an adult m/m romance. This probably falls into that in-between of NA because the characters are in college and aren’t teens. There are a few sex scenes, but they’re easy enough to skip over if you don’t want to read them.

This story ends on a HFN, and I’m kind of sad that the following books in the series don’t follow with more Finn and Roark. In the vein that this book feels like so many YA books even though it’s not YA, it seems weird to switch to other characters’s stories with each new book and I feel like there are some (minor) questions left unanswered from Finn and Roark’s story. The book never shows whether or not Finn ever tells his parents what he’s decided at the end and I really wish it did. It seems empty for them to not know what’s happened, considering how sweet they are and Finn is their only child.

So, with the rest of the books in this series, well, I have THOUGHTS. I liked Sebastian in this story, but I just don’t see why we need to have a new pairing to tell the rest of the books. Because while there is an impended war, I feel like Finn and Roark could have carried on the rest of the books. But maybe that’s because I love Finn and Roark too much and just want to read more from their POVs. I have my suspicious that judging by the title for book three that it’ll be about Roark’s older brother? So, I admit that could be interesting, if we really MUST change love interests each book.

In conclusion, I love this book a lot, and while I’m sort of hesitant about the rest of the books in this series, I will still read them. -Carol (bookish_notes)

MM Fantasy is a hard subgenre for an author to get correct for my tastes. I say that because, as a reader, I don’t have a lot of stories that I’ve 4- or 5-starred.

My first read for Grant delivered so many good things though. I quite enjoyed this book.

Finn and Roarke are students at Mather’s School of Magick, but they are both in their early 20s. The book didn’t read as YA though. There is a lot of maturity in the characters that I was pleasantly surprised by.

Finn is human, but born to exceptional circumstances as he’s able to tap into the unlimited magick of the ley line. For this reason, he is hunted on a regular basis by all different creatures of this world.

His roommate, Roarke, has disliked Finn since they started school. Ok, he’s secretly been in love with Finn for years, but no one needs to know that. Certainly not his mother, the Queen, who, has abducted and tortured Finn herself to try to get access to the ley line.

The world building was fun, BUT this story did cross the line that so many fantasy stories cross, which, for me, is way too much going on. Everything but the kitchen sink is in this book. I won’t say it hindered my enjoyment, but I really wish it was a tad toned down.

What MADE this book for me was the romance. There is a definite slow burn between Finn and Roarke, since they “hate” each other.

Once feelings are revealed, however, all bets are off. I soaked up every ounce of pining to be had. The relationship angst here was all the things! It was marvelous!

So many fantasy stories lose the romance to the back burner. That was not the case here, particularly in the second half.

Blue Dahlia Audio book Summary

Against the backdrop of a house steeped in history and a thriving new gardening business, three women unearth the memories of the past in the first novel in #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts’ In the Garden Trilogy.
A Harper has always lived at Harper House, the centuries-old mansion just outside of Memphis. And for as long as anyone alive remembers, the ghostly Harper Bride has walked the halls, singing lullabies at night…
Trying to escape the ghosts of the past, young widow Stella Rothchild, along with her two energetic little boys, has moved back to her roots in southern Tennessee. She isn’t intimidated by Harper House—nor by its mistress. Despite a reputation for being difficult, Roz Harper has been nothing but kind to Stella, offering her a comfortable place to live and a challenging new job as manager of the flourishing In the Garden nursery.
As Stella settles comfortably into her new life, she finds a nurturing friendship with Roz and expectant mother Hayley and a fierce attraction to ruggedly handsome landscaper Logan Kitridge. He’s difficult but honest, brash but considerate—and undeniably sexy. And for a sensible woman like Stella, he may be just what she needs….
Don’t miss the other books in the In the Garden Trilogy:
Black Rose
Red Lily.

Blue Dahlia Audiobooks Reviews

The beginning threw me off but it totally tied everything together at the end! I HAD to get the other two books to complete this series. Nora Roberts has another Triology called Finding The Dream that I loved years ago…. (in hard copy and audio) but have not gotten into her recent books that seem to be so mystic. Just too over the top for me. And was disappointed in a few I read. But found this series and am loving it. I just finished the second one and am saving the Black Rose for a trip that I have to go on at the end of this week! I am looking forward to the drive now! This one was five stars hands down! Better as an audio book!

This one is a keeper. It’s one of those books that I don’t think I would have normally read, but I was going on a trip and needed an unabridged audio for a long trip. I am totally pleased with the end result. Blue Dahlia is a fun and invigorating read. Logan is a great hero, and Stella is a delightful thorn in his side.

When Stella’s husband dies in a freak accident, she is forced to take on a new type of life. She moves back to her birthplace in Tennessee and takes a job at Harper House. Her new boss is great and her life seems to take o new meaning. Too soon, Logan a fellow employee, roars into her life and turns everything upside down.

And if that isn’t enough, Stella finds herself haunted by the Harper Bride. The trouble is, no one knows who the Bride is or why she doesn’t want Stella and Logan together.

My trip ended before my CDs and I found myself sitting in my car once I got home just to listen to a few more tracs, and even making small needless trips to listen more. The character development is some of Nora’s best and I am looking forward to the rest of the series. Engaging plot, enough emotional tug to keep you hoping it won’t end.

Bared to You Audiobook Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Sylvia Day comes the first novel in the Crossfire series—a provocative masterstroke of abandon and obsession that redefined the meaning of desire, and became a global phenomenon.

Gideon Cross came into my life like lightning in the darkness…

He was beautiful and brilliant, jagged and white-hot. I was drawn to him as I’d never been to anything or anyone in my life. I craved his touch like a drug, even knowing it would weaken me. I was flawed and damaged, and he opened those cracks in me so easily…

Gideon knew. He had demons of his own. And we would become the mirrors that reflected each other’s most private wounds…and desires.

The bonds of his love transformed me, even as I prayed that the torment of our pasts didn’t tear us apart.

Bared to You Audiobook Reviews

This is the first time reading Sylvia Day and I must say it will not be my last.
This is not a (50 Shades of Grey) but much, much more! You must read all 5 books.
I found myself crying, laughing, sad, mad, and even I grabbed my own wrist from time to time. I fell into this story. I lived these characters from the start. Gideon is an Alfa-male that every man wants to be and Eva is the woman I wish I could be. How we live our lives from day to day in this society is taxing to say the least. To grab a book and sink into it (hard) is a release. I had mixed emotions at first but as I read each book it made me want more. Is that not what you want an author to do? Well she fulfilled that in this series. I never wanted it to end and when it did I felt drained. Drained to the core. She stripped away my day to day stress and replaced it with love, lust, honor and most of all courage. I felt alive again. I felt MY soul restored. I never write reviews but I do read them before I buy a book. So if you read mine remember one word and one word only CROSSFIRE! Read all the books to understand!

Fifty Shades of Grey Audiobook Reviews

My order arrived on time and in great shape. I’m thrilled! So why give a terrible book five stars? I teach a human sexuality course at a college, and this book is an EXCELLENT example of poor communication, disrespect between romantic partners, and toxicity in a relationship. It also demonstrates some of the false beliefs about S&M that society holds. Honestly, it reads like the author has never been in a healthy S&M relationship. Safe-word much? These are great examples for my students, and we mock the book openly in class.

Fifty Shades Freed Audiobook Reviews

I have become enticed by these characters and their story. The kinky stuff was interesting to read but I really enjoyed the characters. Their conflict, different personalities, sharing and becoming one in marriage. There is more to the story then the sex and that I enjoyed greatly. I love how Anna loves and helps Christian to become a better himself. Then again the way Christian pushes Anna to be bolder and more attentive is really inspiring. Their love story, yes kinky and out of the normal, is what I wish to accomplish. The partnership, trust, and growth I want in my relationship. I will see about getting my love to read this and maybe I will.

Fifty Shades Darker Audiobook Reviews

I am a recent 50 Shades fan. After watching the movie, without reading the first book, I felt that i was left with a cliff-hanger. Being that I couldn’t leave it at that, I bought the second (and third) book to this series. I was weary at first, but quickly realized that it is not as many people describe.
50 Shades Darker, in my opinion, is very well written, despite a few strange terms, some repetition of words, and a minor typos I found throughout the book.
The plot develops quickly, but in a good way. The story strays from the BDSM spectra, and Christian and Ana’s relationship flourishes. It brings up Christian’s dark past with his childhood, his mother, his exes to where you begin to fully understand the character of Christian. It was enjoyable to see the soft side of “Fifty”.
as most people claim, this series is very sexual. And, to an extent, I agree. In this second book, I found that their romance develops, feelings get strong, and that there is less kink to the sex scenes, and more romance and passion between the characters.
I found that each chapter left off at a suspenseful spot and I couldn’t put it down! I read it through in less than three days.
I am a true romantic, from reading Nicholas Sparks, to a variety of other novels, I found this second book of the 50 Shades trilogy to be captivating, romantic, surprising, and dark all at the same time. Especially the ending (to which I will not spoil). It’s definitely a read that I would recommend.

Dragonfly in Amber Audiobook Summary

The second part of the series from Diana Gabaldon that explores the power of a love which transcends space and time. A magnificent epic that once again sweeps us back in time to the drama and passion of 18th-century Scotland…For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland’s majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones …about a love that transcends the boundaries of time …and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his ….Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire’s spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart …in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising …and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves.

Dragonfly in Amber Audiobook Reviews

FINAL DECISION: I ended up liking this one better than OUTLANDER itself. The story seemed tighter, the relationship between Claire and Jamie more complex and although there is plenty of death and pain in this book, it felt more civilized after the events of the first book. And I ended up in tears for most of the end of this book.

THE STORY: After the events of OUTLANDER, Jaime and Claire have fled to France. There they will try to prevent the coming battle of Culloden in order to prevent the destruction of the Highlanders culture. Their scheme requires them to participate in Eighteenth Century French court politics and intrigues with Bonnie Prince Charlie and the King of France. There are still repercussions from Jamie’s torture and rape at the end of OUTLANDER. Intrigues, danger and the past threaten to tear Jamie and Claire apart even at the point where they share joy at the coming of their child.

OPINION: I liked OUTLANDER, but I liked DRAGONFLY IN AMBER more. OUTLANDER was about Jamie and Claire discovering one another and falling in love. This book is about letting their love and marriage mature. In OUTLANDER Jamie and Claire ran the gauntlet of danger. This book is a slow burn. Things are quieter, more outwardly civilized and yet even more complicated and dangerous. Politics, society and intrigue take up the majority of this book.

For those readers who read OUTLANDER but don’t know more about the series, they will be surprised by the beginning of this book. (I don’t want to give it away, but it is a clever story device to begin the narrative there instead of being strictly chronological). The book feels fresh and different after OUTLANDER. The characters have grown and changed (not always for the good) and there are lots of new characters to get to know. Old friends and enemies also have returned so there is a good reason to review the events of OUTLANDER if you haven’t read it in a while.

Jamie is more remote in this book after the events with Jack Randall in OUTLANDER. He is still struggling with the aftermath and the pressures of trying to save the entire Highlands. Being involved in the political intrigue means that he and Claire spend less time together and thus immense pressure is placed on their relationship.

Claire is also struggling to find her role in this new situation. The new life in the Court of France has new conflicts and restrictions upon this twentieth century woman. She has to use her imperfect knowledge of the past to help avoid Culloden while know knowing whether such a thing is possible. She is also struggling with her relationship with Jamie. She gave up her entire life to be with him and now she has to deal with those consequences.

On a more philosophical point, the book also investigates the idea of changing the past. Is it even possible for Jamie and Claire to change the events that lead to Culloden or does everything they do actually cause that event to happen? Can the past be changed at all? These are universal themes in time travel stories and this book examines those issues with complexity and subtlety. Even better, there are no real answers.

I began reading OUTLANDER when the television series started because I always want to read the books first and I began reading this one in preparation for Season 2. I don’t know if I have been influenced by the series, but I felt that this book went more quickly and the events were clearer, the characters more defined and the outcome more devastating. I cried through the end of the book because it was incredibly well written and sad. At the end of this book, I desperately wanted to begin VOYAGER (book 3) to find out what happens.

WORTH MENTIONING: This book ends on a cliffhanger.

CONNECTED BOOKS: DRAGONFLY IN AMBER is the second book in the Outlander series. It can be read as a standalone, but why do that. Read OUTLANDER first to really appreciate DRAGONFLY IN AMBER.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Virgin River Summary

Beloved author Robyn Carr presents the story of a woman who “needs a change [and] gets something very different than she bargained for” (Booklist, starred review). Recently widowed, grieving Los Angeles midwife/nurse Melinda Monroe answers a small upstate town’s ad for help. Nestled amongst California’s giant redwoods, quaint Virgin River is far removed from the city where Melinda’s beloved husband was violently taken from her. Upon arriving, however, she discovers that her rent-free living quarters are beyond rustic-and home to many critters. And then there are the unsavory marijuana growers lurking in the surrounding woods. But before she can change her mind and head back to L.A., Melinda becomes endeared to Virgin River’s host of quirky characters-including bar owner Jack Sheridan, who may be just the man to make her smile again. The poignant first novel in a series built around people finding love where they least expect it, Virgin River flows perfectly with Thérèse Plummer’s tender narration.

Virgin River by Robyn Carr Audiobook Reviews

“The Virgin River books are so compelling–I connected instantly with the characters and just wanted more and more and more.”

— “Debbie Macomber, #1 New York Times bestselling author” –This text refers to the audioCD edition.

Read the book, don’t watch the show. The show is so way off. If your gonna make a show from a book then do it right. Use the books story not change major stuff in the show.
The book is amazing. I watched the show first because I didn’t know about the book before. I got the book because the show ended on a cliffhanger and I really hate those. So I got the book to see if Mel and jack get together in the end. And I find the book so different from the show and so much better. The story and the characters interactions are connected and just amazing. I am going to go read the second book in the series now. I am hooked now. It took me 2 days to finish the book because I couldn’t put it down. (Sherry)
